Sarah is my sister, and next to Vlad, my best friend. She’s also a super talented artist who designs textiles, among other things. I decided to take one of her designs from Spoonflower and turn it into this embroidery piece. It’s all back stitches in two strands of DMS floss #902.
Sarah, Mom, and me from their recent NYC visit.
You may have figured this out, but Sarah and I are not biologically related. Our parents adopted her from India. Adoption stories always have a lot of layers, and our family is no exception (I also have an adopted brother and a biological brother). But I’m super blessed that Sarah and I have always shared a close relationship.
As kids, Sarah was my idol. I wanted to do everything she did, which I’m sure was pretty annoying at times. But she also made plenty of time to play dress up with me. I was extremely jealous of her long black hair and begged my mom to let me dye mine to match. Thankfully she never let me.
When I was born and came home from the hospital, Sarah and my brother Nathan wanted to eat dinner next to my crib.
As adults, we were roommates together for a few years in New York. That certainly came with its own challenges, but now we’re stronger for it. Now she’s in grad school in Texas, and I really miss having family in the city. Thankfully she still visits pretty often.
I don’t explain the adoption thing to most people we meet together because that would be weird. So it leads to a lot of interesting assumptions. When she and my mom were visiting last week, we went to the Mac makeup store and Sarah was looking at trying a product I use regularly. Mom said, “Your sister can always show you how to use it.” The associate helping us was like, “Yeah! Your sista!” That one happens a lot, as well as people assuming we are a couple. I don’t mind :)
